Even if you've never heard her name, chances are you've seen Ash K Holm's work. The Houston-born, L.A.-based makeup artist's clientele reads like a who's who of Hollywood: Ariana Grande, Lana del Rey, Kris Jenner, and the original Kardashian trifecta—Kim, Khloe, and Kourtney.
Ariana Grande's Met Gala look? Holm. The singer's Sunday night Billboard Music Award performance? Holm. Khloe Kardashian's baby shower? Kim Kardashian's family Easter photos? The makeup in those infamous behind-the-scenes shots of Kim making a plaster mold of her body to form the bottle of her new fragrance? All Holm.
Besides on celebrity's faces, Holm's work has also been featured in publications like Vogue, Nylon, and Marie Claire. And though she's since gained a massive following, it all started right here in Holm's hometown. On June 3, she's coming back to reveal her beauty secrets for a two-day masterclass at the Hyatt Regency Galleria. Tickets start at $350, but mastering that Kardashian contour? Priceless.
How would you describe the signature Ash K Holm look?
Flawless glowing skin, bushy eyebrows, and bold winged eyeliner that you might even see upside down, as shown on my Instagram. I live for a good glam!
How has being from Houston affected your career/style?
Houston is where it all started. I grew up here, went to Paul Mitchell Cosmetology school in San Antonio, then returned to Houston where I held my first makeup job at MAC Cosmetics in the Galleria. It was in Houston where I became the “go-to” celebrity makeup artist, and I wanted to push that status even more, which meant I had to leave my hometown and pursue my dreams in Hollywood. No matter what, I’m proud of where I come from and I’ll never lose sight of that.
What are some staple products every girl should own? What’s a technique every girl should master?
Tom Ford makes a great liquid eyeliner that works just like a pen so it’s easy to apply. It’s a dual-ended pen that allows precise application in the darkest shade of black. It’s important to learn how to apply eyeliner because there are so many different techniques that can bring out any eye shape. This is why I teach my masterclasses, to demonstrate the endless outcomes of makeup.
Which trends are worth trying and which are just passing fads?
Contour and highlight is definitely a makeup game-changer. It’s here to stay! Learning how to contour and highlight is also an important application everyone should master. The fad that can go is the over-illuminated skin. Skin should look like skin and not like your highlighter is glowing from outer space!
What’s it like doing makeup for the Kardashians, who are beauty icons in their own right?
Working for the Kardashians has been a dream come true. They are very loyal and very professional–Momager has taught them well! I have so much respect for each of them and truly enjoy working with the whole family. They are each other's icons and they feed off each other’s beauty and success.
Who are some of your other favorite clients to work on?
Currently, I really enjoy working with Ariana Grande because she trusts me to play and experiment. Same with my other clients–we’ve built a foundation of trust where they allow me to bring out their best beauty. I love working with all of them, from Chanel Iman, Lilly Ghalichi, Dorit Kimsley, and many more.
If you could make over anyone in the world, who would it be?
If you could only wear one product for the rest of your life, what would it be?
I have a signature eyelash with Lilly Lashes. It’s soft, fluffy, and slightly winged out to lift the eyes up. It compliments any eye shape and I truly can’t live without it!
