It's another late-game lineup switch for JMBLYA, the Texas hip-hop festival that began today in Dallas and closes out its three-day tour de force here in Houston on Sunday. ScoreMore Shows announced last night that Grammy-nominated Atlanta rapper T.I. will now replace Kevin Gates for all three festival dates.
The change-up comes on the heels of Cardi B's cancellation, announced last week after the 25-year-old Bronx rapper informed fans she's too pregnant to perform and forfeited her remaining summer appearances. The festival tapped Young Thug to take her place.
ScoreMore Shows said Kevin Gates' team issued "multiple confirmations" the rapper would appear at JMBLYA, set to be his first performance since his January release from prison. That changed, a Thursday evening statement from ScoreMore said, "due to a legal circumstance outside his control. Both the JMBLYA and Gates' team worked tirelessly to make this happen."
The festival organizer was mum on any more details and directed further inquiries to Gates' reps. Gates was paroled after serving nine months of a 30-month sentence for felony gun possession charges. Last year, the Baton Rouge rapper faced battery charges for kicking a woman at his concert and served 180 days of a nine-month sentence.
T.I., a respected hip-hop heavyweight in his own right, joins JMBLYA headliner J. Cole, Houston favorites Bun B and Trae the Truth, Migos, Playboi Carti, and fellow Atlanta emcee Young Thug–here's hoping we get a live version of "About the Money."
