All the apps and services on offer today make having a dog or cat easier—and safer. A few of our favorites:

Rover

Much like a dating app, the site lets owners sort through bios and photos of vetted, reviewed, and insured professionals who can care for your pet when you’re away, whether it’s a walk around the block, an overnight stay, or a midday potty break.

Chewy

Log on for same-day shipping of hundreds of name-brand pet foods, treats, toys, and supplies, complete with a 24/7/365 customer-support team and handy auto-ship options

Pet First Aid American Red Cross

This app features photos and videos helpful for assessing the danger of a given symptom, along with clear instructions on the steps to take before reaching the vet during an emergency.

Whistle

Part pedometer, part alarm, this collar-attachable GPS tracker/app ($72) provides recommendations on pets’ exercise levels based on breed and age. It also alerts owners when animals have escaped their designated safe zones, and helps determine their approximate location, up to 3,000 feet away from home.

Bullymake Box

Power chewers—those dogs who destroy even the toughest of toys—will meet their match in this customizable monthly subscription box. If an item is obliterated within the first 14 days of arrival, the company will even ship out a new “rougher and tougher” toy for free.
