Shakey Graves
June 29 | White Oak Music Hall
Fresh off a new album, the habitually folksy Alejandro Rose-Garcia might've finally come into his own after a career that included a role on Friday Night Lights (as Julie Taylor's poolside Season 2 crush, the Swede) and a promising body of stripped-down, plucky music. His new record is more dreamy, less Americana, and the perfect outdoor performance to usher in a holiday weekend.
Tickets $25. White Oak Music Hall Lawn, 2915 N Main St. 713-237-0370. More info and tickets at whiteoakmusichall.com.
"Shostakovich: First and Last" at the Texas Music Festival
June 30 | Moores Opera House
Han Graf, the Grammy-winning former music director of the Houston Symphony, raises his baton to conduct the final concert of this year's Texas Music Festival. The all-Shostakovich concert caps off the festival with Scherzo No. 1 in F-Sharp minor, the Russian's first orchestral work, and Suite on Verses of Michelangelo Buonarroti, his final.
Tickets from $15. Moores Opera House, 3333 Cullen Blvd. 713-743-3388. More info and tickets at tmf.uh.edu.
Therapy Unicorns at the Children's Museum
June 30 | Children's Museum of Houston
If the unshakeable anxiety of mere existence has exceeded the healing powers of goat yoga or a vanilla miniature horse visit, head to the Children's Museum to commune with very special therapy unicorns. The horn is real, we promise!
Tickets $12. Children's Museum of Houston, 1500 Binz St. 713-522-1138. More info and tickets at cmhouston.org.
Trixie Mattel "Now With Moving Parts" Tour
June 30 | House of Blues
The much-loved winner (and loser) of RuPaul's Drag Race brings her act—“a third standup show, a third music show, a third drag show"—to Houston, a town she clearly has a high opinion of: "It’s super-hot. There was a flood. Rich, white people with pools. JR’s. South Beach." We may not agree with that take 100 percent, but we're still excited for Trixie to sashay our way this weekend.
Tickets from $24.50. House of Blues, 1204 Caroline St. 888-402-5837. More info and tickets at houseofblues.com.
Holmes and Watson
Thru July 22 | Alley Theatre
A mysterious telegram to Dr. John H. Watson suggests the impossible: Might Sherlock Holmes have somehow survived his death at Reichenbach Falls? Award-winning writer Jeffrey Hatcher is back with this riveting adventure detective story.
Tickets from $35. Alley Theatre, 615 Texas Ave. 713-220-5700. More info and tickets at alleytheatre.com.
