A more conscientious existence does not require one to give up shopping—quite the contrary. Simply patronize one of these four thrift shops, which all benefit local charities:
Come For: Well-priced, constantly rotating inventory of everything from vintage blazers and cowboy boots to books and dishware.
Help Out: The Women’s Home, which serves women in crisis and fights homelessness. The shop serves as a job-training site for residents, too.
Come For: You name it—11,000 square feet of antique furniture, dishware, luxury scarves, and other designer items.
Help Out: The ministry at St. John the Divine, which provides financial support to organizations serving the elderly.
Come For: A wide range of apparel and furniture, from designer duds to homeware, at Goodwill prices.
Help Out: Blue Bird Circle, a women’s charity group that supports pediatric neurology treatment and research at Texas Children’s Hospital.
Come For: Clothes, furniture, rugs, household goods, art, and jewelry, all ripe for the picking.
Help Out: The Charity Guild of Catholic Women, which offers grants to charities helping children in need.
