Mitch Albom’s book celebrating the life of his college professor has become an inspirational guidebook of how to truly live for millions of people. When Mitch first wrote the story he never dreamed it would be a worldwide success. It was an assignment from his professor Morrie Schwartz, a thesis of sorts, and ultimately became a way to help Morrie’s family pay his medical bills. But now, almost 20 years later, it has become one of the most read memoirs of all time.
As they assembled their season of shows, A.D. Players decided to launch 2019 with a production of Tuesdays With Morrie, and are thrilled to present this play with two Broadway Veterans helming the two-person script, Kevin Cooney and Jake Speck.
Executive Director of A.D. Players, Jake Speck, is taking the George stage for the first time in the role of Mitch Albom. Jake moved to Houston in August of 2017 to join A.D. Players after serving as Co-founder and Managing Director of Studio Tenn in Franklin, Tennessee. Jake was seen on the Broadway stage for 2 years in Jersey Boys, Off Broadway and regional productions of The Fastest Woman Alive, Les Miserables, Twelve Angry Men, Spamalot and many more, as well as appearances in film and tv. When asked about doing this show at this time Jake said, “My background is really more in theater than musical theater. It’s fun to get back to more of my roots and take on this role. I have been here for a year now, and it felt like the right time to step into the role of actor.”
Kevin Cooney takes the A.D. Player stage for the first time as well, but he is no stranger to performing. His Broadway debut was in The Best Little Whorehouse In Texas, and he hasn’t stopped performing across the country ever since. Kevin’s resume is vast from multiple shows at TUTS in Houston, to New Jersey, California and National Tours, not to mention his extensive career in Los Angeles in television and film. A Houston native, it’s great to have him back treading the boards in Texas.
The story is one of hope, love, purpose, and even redemption. The trajectory of Mitch’s life was completely changed because of his meetings with Morrie, illuminating an ongoing theme of A.D. Players 2018/19 season, one life can make a difference.
