People love Uchi, the Austin import that opened in Houston in 2012. So it was a matter of time before James Beard award-winning chef Tyson Cole, the man behind the upscale Japanese restaurant, made another move in Houston.

On Tuesday, Cole's Hai Hospitality announced that move: Uchiko, which means "Child of Uchi," will open in 2021 at Post Oak Place, a new mixed-used development owned and operated by Zadok Jewelers.

Uchiko, which started in Austin in 2010 (then with Cole's protégé Paul Qui at executive chef), reimagines Uchi's menu and presents dishes in a more casual, farmhouse-chic spot. Guests will get plenty of raw fish, plus wood-fired items and yakitori options, along with a full bar with Japanese whiskeys and Asian cocktails. 

For Cole, the move was easy to make.

“When we opened Uchi in Houston in 2012, it was our first foray out of Austin,” says Cole in a press release. “We love being a part of this Houston community that has been so welcoming and allowed our team to thrive. We couldn’t be more excited for the first expansion of Uchiko to be in Houston."

This will be the first Uchiko outside of Austin. Hai operates Uchis in Austin and Houston, plus in Dallas and Denver, with a Miami location coming in 2020. Other Hai Hospitality concepts include Uchiba (a bar and cocktail hangout) and Loro (Asian smokehouse and bar in collaboration with Aaron Franklin).
