Kristen Fenrick

The first thing I notice about Kristen Fenrick is her aura. She has a calm and secure way about her that makes you want to dive deep into conversation and hear more. The second thing I notice is her earrings. They're bold and beautiful, almost like they're in sync with her personality.

As it turns out, they're Fenrick's own brand, Klearly Kristen. She started her conscious jewelry company five years ago after she and her best friend, then both in abusive relationships, promised each other they would change their lives. Sadly, Fenrick's friend didn't survive, a tragedy that broke Fenrick into pieces—tears form in her eyes today when she talks about it—but also left her even more determined to fulfill the promise.

It comes as no surprise when Fenrick says supporting other women in business is part of her daily routine—I witnessed it first-hand last weekend when I saw Fenrick at an event for a common friend and fellow business owner. "Support can be showing up, answering a question, or providing guidance," she says. "The important thing is to be there."

The following weekend I stop by Social Graces Social Club, the members-only club that promote local small businesses and showcases several vendors' products including Fenrick's. A group of girls is gathered in one area, and as I approach, I can already tell they're trying on Fenrick's jewelry. With a full schedule of events lined up for the coming weeks plus a busy holiday season just around the corner, Fenrick is positioning herself for growth, and women are starting to see things as clearly as Kristen. Sooner rather than later, I suspect, we'll all be wearing her statement pieces.

On where she finds inspiration for her designs:

"Other women that I work and collaborate with—making sure that the person I’m creating for can express herself. I’m always trying to interpret each individual and what message they are trying to convey with their style. Every person is very different; they can choose simplicity or living their life out loud. We all have a different way to communicate."

On the latest key pieces:

"We have a new line of necklaces that you can wear long or short in different layers, ones that you can adapt according to your mood, that are versatile; and a line of bracelets that we just incorporated with the same concept from the brand Erimish. You can stack them with your own individuality. Pieces that have multiple purposes are key nowadays. You can dress them up or down; they are timeless, but still trendy and fun."

On where you can find her jewelry:

"I have a permanent spot at Social Graces Social Club downtown; I also do multiple pop-ups each month. We love doing pop-ups because it allows us to meet new people and really connect with them, something that can get a little bit lost with e-commerce. Our next one will be at Conscious Couture on Saturday, October 19 at Hotel Sorella CityCentre, and it’s for a great cause—Fashion Fights Trafficking—so we are honored to be part of it."

On what's next for the company:

"We are adding a new location in Pearland for the holiday season and exploring one in Atlanta, Georgia. We are also planning pop-ups in L.A., Chicago, and Miami. In addition, I’m developing a subscription model for distributors where they get access to an amount of jewelry per month, in exchange for a fee (from $29 to $59), that they can resell and keep the profits. It’s all about the easiness of subscription models."
