Two restaurants in the Heights are changing things up.

First, BCK is transitioning from nostalgic fare to, well, burgers.

“We made some missteps,” BCK co-owner John Reed said. Our original concept was a beta test for ideas we had. People thought it was cool, but they weren’t coming back time and again. Frankly, we missed the mark. Without a clear identity, we felt the confusion from the consumer and ourselves. We heard the Heights loud and clear of what they are craving, and it’s burgers. That’s what we do really well. We want to become known as the best burger destination in the Heights.”

To that end, with executive chef Peter Petro, the new BCK will have six signature burgers that include a classic called the BCK Burger (beef, pickles, onion, mayonnaise, mustard, ketchup), a Tex-Mex Burger (pickled jalapeño, cilantro, enchilada mayo), and a spicy mac 'n' cheese burger called Return of the Mac (maybe they can't let the nostalgia go completely). 

Along with the burgers, BCK will offer a few favorites from the previous iteration, including the Pasghetti O's, Mac N' Cheez-It, and Shaked + Baked Pork Chops. Cocktails are changing, too, with work by bar manager Donnol Hem and bar director Matt Sharp. Finally, look for an outdoor patio on Studewood Street and a slightly updated interior.


Meanwhile, we've been hearing that Star Fish was going to change its name after being purchased by Sambrooks Management Company. Now it's official: Star Fish will become 1751 Sea and Bar after a four-week interior remodeling.

Named as a reference to the Gin Act of 1751, the restaurant helmed by Michael Sambrooks (The Pit Room), culinary director Lyle Bento, and executive chef J.D. Woodward aims to be the top gin bar in Houston. It'll have an expanded bar area and community table, plus offerings like crawfish soufflé, smoked duck gumbo, paneéd flounder and seafood towers. Along with more than 100 gins on offer, expect a deep wine list curated by general manager Adrian Cuneo, plus cocktails by beverage director David Maness.
