The wide world of fandom and pop culture frequently ebbs and flows, not unlike the trials of life as an adolescent in this, the year 2019. The team behind the Brazoria County Library System understands the need to provide Houston-area younglings with a geekier state of mind the opportunity to share their passions for storytelling and science fiction in a supportive, fun, and educational environment.

Thus the inception of BrazCon, now throwing its third free and family-friendly comic convention featuring everything you’d find at events like Comic Con or Comicpalooza, except with a focus on fan discussions, author signings, and various exciting activities geared toward the next generation of wizards, superheroes, and Jedi.

“We were trying to come up with something that would appeal to tweens and teens, something that could get them involved in reading, to recognize the type of reading they like, as well as giving them the ability to connect with like-minded kids,” says Stephanie Williamson, BCLS children's services coordinator. “We came up with a book-con, comic-con mash-up with some science, crafting and drawing classes mixed in. And, this year we are mashing in an anime con, too.”

Guests will have the opportunity to pick the brains of renowned anime voice actors, participate in costuming discussions and contests, learn the ins and outs of creative writing and art, and so much more. “We hope that they learn something new, whether it’s STEM-based, a game, or how to write, draw, or act, while having fun with other kids their age,” she says.

Headlined by author Nathan Hale of Nathan Hale’s Hazardous Tales, BrazCon will also feature visits from Dagorath, a local live action roleplaying group, and Houston-area chapters of two popular Star Wars cosplay organizations, The 501st Legion and Rebel Legion.

The event will be held this Saturday, February 23, at Manvel High School, located at 19601 Highway 6 in Manvel, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. A multitude of food vendors will be there to help fuel your day of dragon slaying and time traveling, including Papa John’s Pizza, Wylie Street Tacos, and Corey’s Kitchen.
