March 1–24 | The Alley Theatre
It was a pleasant surprise to see The Humans, Stephen Karam's Tony-studded portrait of intergenerational squabbles around the Thanksgiving dinner table, on the Alley's season this year. Karam's drama has quietly surprised critics far and wide as a prescient portrait of family amid the specter of American decline. Our review won't run 'til next week, but we're still comfortable recommending it on reputation alone.
Tickets from $26. Alley Theatre, 615 Texas Ave. 713-220-5700. More info and tickets at alleytheatre.org.
March 2 | Society for the Performing Arts
Ten high-flying dogs will be competing for your attention in this "canine cabaret," replete with Frisbee shenanigans and tricks from the likes of Feather, the world's highest-jumping dog. Fair warning: You'll have to put up with their two human handlers, too.
Tickets from $45. Jones Hall, 615 Louisiana St. 713-22-4772. More info and tickets at spahouston.org.
March 2 | Toyota Center
There's something special about the former first lady's recent memoir that tells a story that's equal parts bracing, inspiring, and instructive—one that the New York Times described as "a study in what happens when the ways we see ourselves don't always line up with the ways that society sees us." Join America's most-admired woman (per Gallup) as she rides the wave of her sold-out stadium book tour. Maybe she'll even roll up in that oh-so-famous pair of boots.
Re-sale prices vary. Toyota Center, 1510 Polk St. Tickets available via Stubhub.
March 1 | Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo
The Houston Chronicle recently asked "Is the rodeo ready for Cardi B?" Based on the fact that the "Bodak Yellow" rapper's tickets sold out in 40 minutes flat—faster than even George Strait himself—we'd say the answer is a resounding yes. It's still unclear how the notoriously raunchy artist will manage to perform an all-clean set, but given the 26-year-old's ever growing star power, we're excited to see what happens. There's still time to pick up seats on the re-sale market—act quick.
Re-sale prices vary. NRG Stadium, NRG Pkwy. More info and tickets at axs.com.
March 3 | Lei Low
We've loved this strip mall tiki bar since the beginning as a charming, if quirky place to quaff inventive cocktails from equally inventive barware. Sunday's birthday party celebrates half a decade with live music and special tiki mugs for sale. See you on the back patio?
Free. Lei Low, 6412 N Main St. 713-380-2968. More info via Facebook.
