Let's face it—music lovers worldwide continue to mourn the death of David Bowie since his passing earlier this year. On Friday, MKT Bar at Phoenicia Specialty Foods Downtown celebrates his legacy with an epic karaoke tribute where guests are invited to rock out, Bowie-style.
Houstonia’s-own Alice Levitt, a self-proclaimed “Bowie-phile,” will serve as the expert emcee for the event. Her carefully curated song list includes more than 50 Bowie hits, accompanied by songs from various Bowie-esque musicians.
“It was important to me to include not only as many Bowie originals as possible, but also the artists who influenced him,” Levitt says. “We have songs from cockney-crooner Anthony Newley, Jacques Brel (whom Bowie covered in English on “Amsterdam”) and even Kurt Weill. We even go as deep as including a song from Scott Walker, one of Bowie’s notable vocal influences. Inversely, we’re also including artists influenced by Bowie, from the Killers to Morrissey to Lady Gaga. And yes, we have a song from Labyrinth.”
The night wouldn’t be complete without a Bowie-inspired beverage called the “Stardust Cocktail.” In honor of Ziggy Stardust, one of Bowie’s signature characters, this delectable drink features punch and Prosecco topped with a satisfying portion of whipped cream, sparkly sugar and Pop Rocks for $5. It’s the ultimate rock star treatment for an oh-so-affordable price.
The celebration will kick off at 10 p.m. and guests are encouraged to get creative with their outfits. Need help getting into character? A face painter will be there applying lightning bolts and other Bowie-inspired designs to dedicated attendees.
