Without school to keep them occupied, kids are eager to exercise their creative muscles—perhaps at the expense of your freshly laid carpet and newly painted walls. But encouraging artsy kids doesn't have to mean living in a messy house. Instead, drop them off at one of the many art camps in town, where they’ll be able to paint, sculpt, and stain the tables to their hearts’ content. Whether it’s creating landscapes out of watercolor at the Houston School of Art and Design or sewing their very own summer outfit at Monart School of Art, the sky's the limit for your little artists.
Here’s our list of the top summer art camps and classes Houston has to offer:
Available through August 12 | register online | ages 6–18
If your kid is a great artist in the making, sign them up for the Houston School of Art and Design’s summer program. Daily classes cover everything from painting with watercolor and tempera to working with colored pencils and pastels. The classes are designed to provide students with a well-rounded artistic education that primes them to create stellar works of art, no matter their skill level. And the learning doesn't stop at summer camp—the school also offers daily classes in the fall.
Available through August 19 | register online | ages 3–12
For kids who won’t be satisfied until their hands are dirty, Kidcreate Studio is the place to be. Single-day workshops and weeklong camps feature artistic endeavors like sculpting a fairy cottage or creating unicorn slime. Some camps even offer attendees the chance to paint or sculpt their favorite character, like Pikachu from Pokémon or Mirabel from Encanto. The studio also offers weekly classes in subjects like painting and glitter crafts in the fall.
Available through August 19 | register online | ages 3–18
While all of Monart School of Art’s themed art workshops will excite your kids, the gems of its summer program are its fashion camps. From drafting their designs to using a sewing machine, kids will learn the basics of fashion design and put together their very own wearable creations. Whether they end up making an evening dress, a pair of shorts, or a mesh top, every one of Monart’s campers will walk away with a valuable life skill and a new outlet for their creativity.
Available through August 29 | register by email | ages 3+
At Tree House Arts and Crafts, kids can let their crafty side shine with unique artsy activities like designing dog houses for their stuffed animals or painting mosaics onto tote bags. Each week of camp features a different theme that brings with it new crafts, coloring sheets, and stories. And don’t think the theme is limited to the daily activities—kids are always encouraged to dress up according to the theme as well, their camp-supplied aprons protecting their costumes from any stains.
Available through September 2 | register online, in-studio, or by phone | ages 5–17
Interested in an art class that comes with a lifelong souvenir? Look no further than the Mad Potter’s weekly summer camps, where kids will play games, make crafts, and, most importantly, paint their very own pieces of pottery to take home with them at the end of camp. With choices like ice cream cone coin banks, dragon statuettes, and bulldog mugs, there’s a project for every kid in the pottery studio. And if the camps don’t fit your schedule, you can always make a family visit to the Mad Potter any day of the week.
