It's hard to accurately show that these boudin balls are large and in charge.

A few years ago I wrote a highly sophisticated piece in two-part installments titled, “They’ve Got Balls!,” detailing the best sweet and savory spherical dishes on offer in Houston.

Unfortunately, in compiling my list of best salty balls to sink your teeth into, I neglected to include the seafood boudin balls at The Stuffed Baked Potato Factory. This was a massive, and I do mean massive, oversight, and I’m here to make amends.

Not only do the Factory’s ginormous cheesy seafood globules deserve a spot on any round-up of edible orbs in Houston, but also their terrific taste and truly impressive size put them in contention for the title of "Biggest and Best Balls."

Made from shrimp and crawfish boudin with what at least tastes like onions and cayenne pepper mixed with thickly shredded mozzarella cheese, the Factory’s balls are then treated to a thick exterior coat of bread crumbs before being deep fried to a perfect dusky brown crisp.

Rarely does a restaurant actually understate the magnitude of one of its most popular dishes and undersell its potential to satisfy even the largest of appetites. Such is the case, however, at The Stuffed Baked Potato Factory, which as its name suggests, is primarily focused on serving spuds topped with multiple smoked proteins and various condiments. When describing the seafood boudin balls, the owners claim them to be “softball-sized."

Having played softball for more than 10 years in my youth, I can attest that no sports organization in America would sanction the use of a ball that big in league play. I'd put them more on par with one of those miniature basketballs you use in free-throw arcade games or even a child’s bowling ball.

I kid; these things are just about softball-sized. And though bigger almost always does not mean better when it comes to food, these super-sized boudin balls, since they have large chunks of prawns and crawfish rather than just crustacean bits, are the exception to the rule.

Finally, what’s the best thing about The Stuffed Baked Potato Factory’s boudin balls? They come two to an order so you can relish them with a friend … or just have more for you.
