This week we have an upcoming Karbach beer release with some big names behind it, plus a couple taprooms are opening back up after months away. Here's the beer news:

Houston chef Chris Shepherd and Austin barbecue pitmaster Aaron Franklin are known to pal around from time to time, whether it's at the former's Southern Smoke festival or at the latter's Hot Luck festival. But this time they're teaming up to put their names to a beer benefiting Shepherd's Southern Smoke Foundation.

With Karbach, the duo has created Horseshoe Pilsner, a 4.5-percent ABV that'll be available in six-packs at grocery and liquor stores and in draft at select restaurants and bars throughout Texas starting October 5. For each amount of beer sold equivalent to a case, $0.25 will go to Southern Smoke.

Texas Leaguer is hosting an Oktoberfest celebration starting at noon September 19. Get a Mr. Oktoberfest stein for $10 and hear live music from The Homebrewed Brass Ensemble 3–6 p.m.

City Acre is hosting a Pickle Party with pickle beer; fried chicken and pickles; specialty pickles; and more. Available both Saturday and Sunday at the brewpub.

Astral Brewing's taproom is back open starting today. Also, Baileson is back starting todayand Khoi Barbecue will be serving up its meats starting at noon Sunday.

Beer Releases

Saint Arnold has brewed a Black is Beautiful with proceeds going to the Center for Urban Transformation. It's available by ordering online. Read more about the Black is Beautiful effort here.

Eureka Heights has brewed one for the dogs: My Own Best Friend is a fruited kolsch with cherries and raspberries. You can get it in four-packs at the brewery. And Saturday, head to the brewery to pick up one of its Oktoberfest packages, made in collaboration with Kortex BBQ. Each contains food from Kortex, plus a six-pack of Von Wolfhausen festbier and a 0.5-liter boot glass, perfect for enjoying all those brews.

Sigma's latest is Reticulum, an 8.8-percent ABV double New England IPA brewed with South African hop variants African Queen and Southern Star. It's available starting today.

Southern Star is now in the low-calorie IPA game with Lil' Cal, a 100-calorie beer.
