Bartenders Share Favorite Drinks to Make at Home

Let's check in with some of our favorite mixologists.

Upgrade your day or night at home with a craft cocktail.

It Seems like forever ago since COVID-19 upended our daily lives. Friends and family members we would see on the daily now seem millions of miles away, so we turn to interactive chatting apps for happy hour. Meanwhile, our evening haunts sit empty with uninhabited bar stools, so we turn to ourselves to become the bartenders.

If you’re like me, you’ve exhausted all of your bartending skills making palomas and screwdrivers. Luckily, we have two bartenders in the midst of this sojourn willing to impart some bartending knowledge to help elevate your mixing game.

  • Bartending at: Better Luck Tomorrow
  • Quarantine hobby: Building anything, biking, exploring the hidden parks of Houston that no one knows about

Cocktail: Beer Rita

  • 2 oz tequila
  • 1 oz lime juice
  • 0.5 oz agave syrup
  • light beer to fill to top

Combine tequila, lime juice, and agave, then shake and dump into a margarita glass or pint glass. Top with your choice of light beer.

  • Bartending at: Aspiring and hopeful to be apprentice at Rosewater
  • Quarantine hobby: I have spent a lot of time reading books and studying for certifications. I have also been working with the USBG National Charity Foundation to help industry professionals all over the country. Other than that, I've slept and eaten a lot. All of my shirts are tight now, and I can't button my Polos any more. I can't wait to squeeze into a medium shirt and eat a steak while sitting at a friend's bar once it's safe and socially responsible to do so.

Cocktail: Remember the Maine (ish)

  • 2 oz Wild Turkey 101 rye whiskey
  • 0.75 oz Cocchi di Torino vermouth
  • 0.25 oz Mountain Dew Code Red syrup (equal parts Mountain Dew Code Red, turbinado sugar, boiled so sugar dissolves, then brought to at least room temperature)
  • 2 dashes absinthe

Stir ingredients in mixing glass until diluted and chilled. Strain into cold cocktail glass, and zest with peel of lemon and garnish.
