april showers may bring May flowers, but the first weekend of May also brings fabulous hats, seersucker suits, mint juleps, and scores of folks with a sudden interest in three-year-old thoroughbreds. Houston, it's almost Derby Day.

More interested in Cinco de Mayo? We've got a list for that too.

Julep

May 6, 1pm | $25

When a bar is named after the drink synonymous with the Kentucky Derby, you best believe they're throwing a massive Derby Day affair. Expect a lawn party to the max with free-flowing mint juleps, tacos, live music, and plenty of snazzy headgear.

Brasserie 19

May 6, 12:30–7:30pm

This French restaurant may have escargot and rabbit confit on the menu, but come its annual Kentucky Derby Hat Party, all bets are on the themed food and drink specials. Wear your finest chapeau for a chance to win a champagne brunch for six.

Let's Get Down & Derby: Heights Bier Garten

May 6, 1–10pm

The actual horse race will be over quicker than you can down a cocktail, but Heights Bier Garten knows how to make it a true Derby Day. DJ Troy and a live band keep the mood upbeat; food and drink specials sure do too. Pooches and people can enter to win the best-dressed contest, in their respective categories of course.

Heights & Co.

May 6, noon–6pm

Come dressed to the nines—if anything to show off your finest fit in the Heights' shaded outdoor patio—to win the best dressed or best hat contest. Even if you don't take home either prize, the julep cocktails and live music make it all worth it.

Eight Row Flint

May 6

E'terie Bar and Grill

May 6

Why settle for the classic mint julep when you can have a PB&J variety or one starring rum and chocolate bitters? Why indeed say the fine folks at this Embassy Suites bar.

Did someone say juleps? It's on at E'terie Bar and Grill.
