Bearded, large-bellied men, knights in shining armor and wart-faced wenches will all clink mead glasses at this 41st annual Ren Fest which, true to Texas form, is without peer. “We’re the largest in the nation both in size and scope,” says the Festival’s Travis Bryant. “We turn 55 acres into 16th-century England, a fully immersive theater experience.” Last year, the fest brought in more than 500,000 attendees, and Bryant et al. are hoping that this installment will be bigger still. Jousting and lute music, falconry and open-air markets—they’ll all be on vivid display, as will a heavy presence of Renaissance regalia. “We were cosplay,” says Bryant, “before cosplay was cool.”
