Property Watch: A Modernized Brick Tudor Built in 1928

Are the brass pots and pans included? If so, we're in.

With Melissa Dalton

Alfred C. Finn was a busy guy. Despite having only taken a correspondence course in architecture when he started as a draftsman at a premier Dallas firm in 1904, Finn would go on to design a lot of important buildings in and around Houston, from the San Jacinto Monument and Sam Houston Music Hall and Coliseum, to the City National Bank Building and numerous mansions for early-twentieth-century VIPs. You can see one of those for yourself by visiting the restaurant or bar in the La Colombe d’Or Mansion Hotel, formerly known as the Fondren Mansion, designed by Finn for an oil tycoon.

While Finn is credited with spreading the then emerging Art Deco style around Texas, his work really spans the gamut: from Spanish Colonial, to Neoclassical, to this handsome brick Tudor in Boulevard Oaks. Built in 1928, rather than skew towards curving flourish, it has Art Deco echoes in the squared angles of the archways and the geometric window pattern on the front door.

Tudors can feel small and compartmentalized, but not this one. The main rooms flank the entry hall, and are characterized by high ceilings, lots of windows, and wood floors. The living room has two double glass doors facing the front yard, while the dining room is defined by one long built-in bench/window seat on one wall. That room comfortably meets the kitchen, which is wrapped with custom cabinetry, quartz counters, and high-end appliances.

On the same floor, find a comfy den lined with bookshelves, a powder bathroom covered in luxe wallpaper, a family room with a fireplace, and the primary suite with two separate bathrooms. The rest of the bedrooms are upstairs, with three full baths, and a fifth bedroom that is currently styled as a game room.

Even better than the house’s historic provenance is the more modern treatment in the backyard, where there’s not one, but two different areas, both of which are easily accessed by multiple exterior doors.

The West yard has a courtyard feel and is ready for hosting al-fresco meals, with a stone patio, pergola, and deck with custom bench encircling a mature tree. The East yard is set up with relaxation in mind, including a pitched-roof pavilion anchored by a fireplace, a cozy seating area, and pool that could double as a sleek water feature.
