It’s hard to believe, but the phrase “modern farmhouse” didn’t enter mainstream culture until just a short time ago: 2016, to be exact. That year, The New York Times used it to describe a farmhouse update from design world darlings, the firm Jersey Ice Cream Co. But prior to that, the style had already been percolating in popular culture due to Texas’s own Fixer Upper, which debuted in 2013, so designer Joanna Gaines and her love of shiplap is largely credited with spreading it the mainstream.
As an aesthetic, modern farmhouse typically includes a few key features: the aforementioned shiplap, white paint, reclaimed wood, and probably an apron-front sink in the kitchen. And indeed, this 2020 custom-built home in the Spring Branch West neighborhood embraces many of those things.
But thanks to a collaboration between builder Exquisite Homes and Houston designer JD Bartell Designs, the overall look here is more refined. There is shiplap, but it’s been mixed into an elegant palette, including artful wall tile, designer lighting, custom built-ins, and white oak floors.
Sitting on a large corner lot with several mature trees, the home’s covered front porch—of course, it wouldn’t be a farmhouse without a front porch—cedes to a double glass door at the entry. Inside, the great room is the heart of the plan, with double-height ceilings and glass doors to the backyard. That room is flanked by a dining area made cozy under a lower ceiling, as well as the large eat-in kitchen, fitted with a central island that can comfortably seat six, and yes, an apron-front sink tucked beneath the window.
Designer details throughout crisp up the modern farmhouse look, from the black and white color scheme that veers more polished than folksy, to the patterned tile backsplash behind a floating stone vanity in a bathroom, to the tailored, two-toned built-ins in the sage green study.
The main floor also has the primary suite, complete with double vanities, walk-in shower, and soaking tub niche painted an inky black. Upstairs, a gallery-like hallway lined with more built-in shelves and a streamlined black metal railing overlooks the living room, and there’s three more bedrooms, three baths, a media room and game room.
The backyard is as modern as it gets, with an agile outdoor entertaining set-up that includes a covered built-in grill station, and a lounge area beside the pool and spa. But not to worry, the detached gym/cabana maintains the classic good looks of the main house, down to the white siding, black-framed doors and windows, and metal roof.
