The future of cannabis in Texas is making headway—whether it’s fully welcome or not. This week, the state's largest medical cannabis provider, Texas Original, opened a permanent pickup location on Houston Avenue in the Heights. The 1,776-square-foot dispensary will operate five days per week, seven hours per day, for qualifying patients and will offer TXOG’s full suite of medical cannabis products, including gummies, sprays, tinctures, and lozenges.
"This is a monumental step forward for medical cannabis access in Houston and across the state of Texas. Patients in one of the most populated cities in the country can now locally pick up their life-changing medication five days a week," Morris Denton, CEO of Texas Original said in a statement. "Reliable and convenient access to medicine is what all patients deserve—we’re proud to deliver on that promise for Houstonians."
As one of three licensed medical cannabis providers in the state, Texas Original is poised to serve thousands of existing patients and new qualifying patients throughout the greater Houston area with the new facility. (TXOG also has pop-up, limited-hours area pickup spots in North Houston and Katy.) To bring its medicine closer to patients, and because medical cannabis licensees are prohibited under the Compassionate Use Program from storing inventory overnight in multiple locations, TXOG and its fleet of delivery drivers will supply daily inventory to the Houston dispensary and return it to its Austin operations base after operating hours.
“What’s most important is ensuring every qualifying patient in Houston has safe access to medical cannabis,” Denton says. “If that means someone from our team has to commute from Austin to Houston and back every day, which is at least five hours, we’ll do it. Creating and leading this industry in Texas takes commitment, and this is just one more proof point illustrating our dedication to expanding our footprint to meet patients where they are.”
Since 2020, TXOG has worked with physicians’ offices throughout the state to provide temporary prescription pickup locations for patients. The company currently operates more than a dozen pickup sites, including locations in North Austin, Dallas, El Paso, Lubbock, San Antonio, and Wichita Falls.
According to the Texas Department of Public Safety, there are only three licensed medical cannabis providers in Texas: Fluent (delivery service only, available in Houston), Texas Original (delivery and pickup available in Houston), and Goodblend (delivery and pickup available in Houston). Other options for qualified patients include telehealth clinics and delivery services like Texas Cannabis Clinic and Houston Cannabis Club.
While the Lone Star State still has a long way to go before seeing cannabis fully legalized, with the opening of this new permanent facility, Houstonians dealing with specific illnesses figure to see some relief in finding the medications they need.
“Opening this location not only expands access for our thousands of existing patients in the Houston area, but gives thousands more the opportunity to learn about and benefit from the power of medical cannabis,” Denton says. “And it shows Houstonians how medical cannabis can be an effective method to relieve symptoms associated with cancer, PTSD, epilepsy, and the hundreds of other qualifying conditions under the Compassionate Use Program.”
