You know it’s officially the holiday season when the Galleria brings out its 55-foot tree adorned in more than 450,000 twinkling lights and 5,000 ornaments—which, by the way, takes 50 people more than 24 hours of round-the-clock work to install.
Dubbed the “Annual Ice Spectacular and Tree Lighting,” the event is a tradition for Houston. For 33 years, the Galleria Christmas tree has been one of the most meaningful holiday ceremonies in the city—they started hand-fluffing more than 1,000 branches back in September (no joke). This year, the Ice Spectacular and Christmas Tree lighting will take place on Saturday, November 12.
While the Christmas tree lighting will take place later on in the evening, the entire day is with a series of family-friendly activities—face painting, balloon art, and a coloring station will be available. Lookout for the skating Santa Claus and the fireworks display. For parents who want to get that head start on holiday gifts, keep your eyes peeled for specials from participating stores.
As usual, expect live music to be a part of the holiday spectacular. The Christmas tree lighting typically features performances from iconic singers. In years past, Gyth Rigdon, The Voice season 16 runner-up, and Houston native Dana Monique, The Voice season 20 contestant, have performed. This year, during the 45-minute tree-lighting show, American Idol’s Leah Marlene will perform. The 21-year-old had a successful run on the show, finishing season 20 in the top three. Her angelic voice will provide the holiday carols for the evening, welcoming Houston into the holiday season.
Family-friendly activities will begin at noon. At 6:00 p.m., the countdown to the grand lighting of the tree and fireworks will begin.
If you miss the lighting of the tree, no worries, you can take a gander at the holiday lights in the Galleria all season long. Let the holiday shopping commence!
