Last weekend saw the premiere of a rebranded Theta Design Weekend–formerly known as the Theta Charity Antiques Show–as the 65-year-old tradition pivoted toward longevity, expanding beyond fine collectibles to include art, jewelry, furniture and other elements of design.
The three-day event held downtown at the George R. Brown Convention Center also brought a number of big names to Houston for luncheons, lectures and speaker series. On Saturday, that took the form of McALPINE Group, a renowned residential architecture and interior design partnership headquartered in Montgomery, Ala. and Nashville, Tenn.
The firm, which markets itself as “a family of sorts” fronted by seven partners–including eponymous founding architect Bobby McAlpine– boasts clients with serious name recognition, including Faith Hill, Tim McGraw and Harry Connick Jr.
Joined by partners David Baker, Ray Booth and Susan Ferrier, McAlpine took Theta’s stage last weekend for a discussion on design, inspiration, beauty and the group’s latest book, Poetry of Place: The New Architecture and Interiors of McALPINE, published by Rizzoli.
Here, snapshots of the participating partners and selected McALPINE works appear with our favorite quotes from Saturday’s talk, which was moderated by Margot Shaw, founding editor of Birmingham, Ala.-based Flower Magazine.
