Champions for literacy gathered at the Post Oak Hotel on October 23 for the Barbara Bush Houston Literacy Foundation's third annual Power of Literacy luncheon, honoring the former First Lady. The grand lobby and ballroom of the hotel were decorated with giant balloons and each table was donned with bright, colorful flowers and featured an 18-inch cutout of Barbara Bush.
At the luncheon, the Ladies for Literacy Guild President Stephanie Tsuru announced the launch of the First Lady's Book Club as well as a special donation of $75,000 from Houston Children's Charity, led by CEO Laura Ward. The guild plans to use the money to build another Curiosity Cruiser mobile library, which has assisted more than 7,000 underserved children, distributing more than 14,000 books in the community since the first cruiser hit the streets last year.
The program was emceed by KPRC Anchor Rachel McNeil and featured former First Lady Laura Bush in a "fireside chat" moderated by Pierce Bush, Laura Bush's nephew and CEO of Big Brothers, Big Sisters Lone Star.
The event, chaired by Cathy Cleary, was attended by more than 600 guests and raised more than $350,000 to help support the Guild’s activities and literacy initiatives.
