the Houston gulf coast chapter of JDRF, the leading global organization focused on type 1 diabetes research, pulled off a storybook affair late last month and raised $1.8 million for the cause in the process. The annual Promise Ball, this year called Through the Looking Glass, was held Saturday, April 21 at the Marriot Marquis Houston.
There, over 1,000 guests in black-tie attire wandered through a whimsical garden for a cocktail hour filled with recognizable storybook characters like Alice, the Mad Hatter, the White Rabbit, and the Cheshire Cat. Inside the ballroom, a live auction offered a private Caribbean yacht cruise, a VIP Houston Astros fan experience, and a black Lab puppy; Rockets playoffs tickets and a pair of 20-carat rd diamond earrings were raffled off, too.
Chaired by Charity and John Todd, the ball honored Linda and Bob Brown, also presenting sponsors along with Hagans Montgomery & Rustay, and corporate honoree Sendero Midstream Partners. Longtime volunteers Marshall and Suzette Lang received the Fielding and Meredith Cocke Visionary Award. Texans TV host Drew Dougherty and Andrea Bishop–replete in a Christian Siriano dress the designer selected for the event–emceed the affair, which also saw live music from Skyrocket! and late night casino games. Later, a Young Leadership Committee Gala After-Party kept guests on their feet until 1 a.m.
