Travis Sauvain, assistant general manager of Doris Metropolitan, said at Houstonia's third annual Secret Supper that the Montrose restaurant simply aims to make people smile.

Judging by the faces of the guests at this year's event: mission accomplished.

Forty guests at the suppers on Sunday and Monday evenings enjoyed a fantastic three-course meal that showcased Doris Metropolitans' many strengths: dry-aged beef cooked by chef Shachar Kurgan and his team to mouthwatering perfection; vegetable-focused sides influenced by Mediterranean cultures and customs; and the skills of pastry chef Michal Michaeli, from seductive housemade cakes to an irresistible bread service. Readers also sipped whiskey samples and specialty cocktails, and learned about the craft of whiskey distilling and tasting from Jack Daniel's, one of the sponsors of Secret Supper along with Audi Central Houston, which shared two gorgeous models from its fleet at valet.

Secret Supper celebrates the wealth of exceptional dining experiences in Houston, showcased annually with our Best Restaurants issue, which is available now. Doris Metropolitan was named one of the 50 top restaurants in the Bayou City, the 2017 newcomer praised for ingeniously twisting the traditional steakhouse model with succulent tenderloin, showstopping wagyu, and appetizers that complement with flavors of Israel and the Middle East.

All of that was evident at Secret Supper. Bone marrow elevated the tenderloin, while the wagyu tomahawk melted in one's mouth. Guests raved about the beetroot, which when sliced unveils a lovely spill of seven cheeses and pistachios. The octopus—sous-vide then grilled—also shone, perfectly paired with a dill-forward tzatziki. Guests began the meal enjoying a wonderful bread service led by a savory onion roll, while a not-too-heavy cheesecake stole the show at dessert.

Guests at both services were quite happy with the entire evening, proving Doris Metropolitan knows exactly how to execute its mission.
