Despite the cold, hundreds of people turned out to cheer as the 41st annual Original Martin Luther King Jr. Parade, sponsored by the Black Heritage Society and the City of Houston, made its way through downtown Monday morning. The parade is one of countless events being held both in the city–the MLK Grande Parade took place in nearby Midtown at the same time—and across the country to celebrate Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
It must have been something to see Astros outfielder George Springer as one of the grand marshals of the parade, but he wasn't the real star of the show. Spectators cheered wildly when famed civil rights icon U.S. Rep. John Lewis, who marched with King in Alabama more than 50 years ago, passed by.
