Family time is important, and what better way to make memories with the kids than to take them to the Jurassic Park of Texas: Glen Rose. One minute you’re walking among towering oak and sycamore trees, and the next thing you know, you stumble across a dinosaur footprint! How cool is that? Fun fact: New dinosaur footprints were just discovered in August at Dinosaur Valley State Park.

Situated among the rolling hills of North Texas, just 60 miles southwest of Fort Worth, the “Dinosaur Capital of Texas” has plenty of small-town charm and a host of unique, family friendly things to do this winter. It’s also home to Squaw Valley Golf Course, consistently rated as one of the top courses in the state.

What to Do in Glen Rose, Texas

Search for dinosaur tracks and explore miles of scenic trails at Dinosaur Valley State Park. Once upon a time, this park was at the edge of an ancient ocean, and the tracks you’ll find here were left by an Acrocanthosaurus (a smaller relative of the Tyrannosaurus rex). For a panoramic view of the park, choose the Overlook Trail, a short but semi-challenging half-mile uphill hike. Need more dinosaurs? Head to Dinosaur World Texas, where you’ll see hundreds of life-size dinosaurs and your kids can play in the dino-themed playground. If being by the water is more your thing, check out Big Rocks Park, located on the Paluxy River. The park is full of unusually large rocks with plenty of shallow areas for children to climb, explore, and play.

Go on a safari tour at Fossil Rim Wildlife Center (a nonprofit organization specializing in captive breeding programs for indigenous and exotic endangered and threatened species). Be sure to stop at the overlook for an amazing view of the entire park. Choose from a self-guided driving tour, or ride in one of their vehicles on a guided safari tour, where the highlight is feeding the giraffes.

Where to Eat in Glen Rose, Texas

Step into Storiebook Cafe, the cutest small-town coffee shop two blocks from the historic square, for sandwiches, salads, and wraps. Nestle in and enjoy the board games on the tables and the wall of books.

For a heartier meal, Hammond’s BBQ—established in 1966—is a great choice. Stop by for some amazing side dishes like fried okra, and although not always available, make sure to ask for one of Judy’s homemade pies. Riverhouse Grill is the best kept secret in Glen Rose and is perfect for dinner and drinks. If the weather is nice, grab a seat on the patio and start off with the truffle fries.
