J.J. Watt to Host Saturday Night Live Ahead of Super Bowl

While J.J. Watt unfortunately will not play on Super Bowl Sunday, he will make a small-screen appearance that weekend when he hosts the Feb. 1 episode of NBC’s Saturday Night Live.

The Texans defensive end is no stranger to acting. He’s played himself in both FX’s The League and New Girl on Fox and popped up in the 2016 films Bad Moms and Billy Lynn’s Long Halftime Walk.

Watt is the first athlete to host the sketch comedy show since Charles Barkley’s appearance in March 2018. Other NFL players who have hosted the show over the years include Joe Montana, Walter Payton, Tom Brady and the Manning brothers.

A three-time Defensive Player of the Year’s episode will also feature musical guest Luke Combs, who plays at the Toyota Center in April.

SNL returns from its winter hiatus on Jan. 25 with actor Adam Driver as host and Halsey as musical guest.

After leaving her hometown of Baltimore, Emma spent five years covering arts & culture in the mountains of Virginia before joining Houstonia in January 2020. During her tenure in the commonwealth, she walked with ghosts through the state's oldest municipal cemetery, became BFFs with one of the writers behind the Despicable Me franchise, and borderline stalked an Elvis Tribute Artist — but in her defense, she won multiple awards for that story, and he was crowned the world's best ETA. Her work has been picked up by The Washington Post, Los Angeles Times and The Associated Press. When Emma's not chasing down a story, taking in a musical, or watching a superhero TV show, she's spending time with her giant, sweet potato fry-stealing cat, Boh (named after Charm City icon Natty Boh), whose raison d'etre is to be a real-life Garfield.
