The new Young Neighborhood Library is located in the Third Ward off the METRORail Purple Line.

Paging Third Ward bookworms: The Alice McKean Young Neighborhood Library opened its sleek doors this Saturday at its new 16,000-square-foot campus, closing its former location down the street in a retail center. Now located at 5107 Griggs Road, the new venue—near the MetroRAIL’s Purple Line/Palm Center stop—is still accessible to Houstonians across the city.

Before: The former Young Library facility was located in the Palm Center retail mall.

The state-of-the-art branch, which is double the size of its former strip mall location, was designed by architectural firm Perkins+Will. Boasting a modern, streamlined design, the new facility is equipped with meeting spaces, new technology and, of course, a trove of tomes.

After: The new 16,000-square-foot campus was designed by architectural firm Perkins+Will.

Library highlights include computer classes, open job labs and homework help sessions. There’s also new programs and technology, like 3-D printers, a multimedia space for photo editing, a machine that converts VCR tapes to DVDs and iPad Pros for kids to learn computer coding.

Through a series of meetings with residents, Perkins+Will and Houston Public Library officials designed a technologically-advanced campus with cutting-edge library services for the growing community.

“It is anticipated that the replacement Alice M. Young Neighborhood Library will serve as a catalyst for business and cultural growth in its rapidly-changing neighborhood,” Perkins+Will shared in an announcement.
