WHAT: Preservation Houston’s Cornerstone Dinner presenting the 2016 Good Brick Awards
WHEN: Friday, February 19
WHERE: River Oaks Country Club

Preservation Houston continued its nearly 40-year tradition of honoring excellence in local historic preservation by presenting the 2016 Good Brick Awards during the Cornerstone Dinner. Event chairs Elizabeth and Richard Husseini selected the evening’s theme, “A Night at the Shamrock,” celebrating Houston’s legendary Shamrock Hotel (1949–1987).

Great Day Houston’s Deborah Duncan emceed the awards presentation with interior designer Bill Stubbs. Among the Good Brick Award recipients were Mo and Ric Campo and Jim Reeder and Eric Nevil for restoring their landmark River Oaks homes and Dallas McNamara for her project using a historic bungalow to bring art into the Cherryhurst neighborhood.

Phoebe Tudor and Doreen Stoller accepted the Future Landmark Award for McGovern Centennial Gardens & Cherie Flores Garden Pavilion from Preservation Houston’s Claire Cormier Thielke and Dave Morris. Preservation Houston President John N. Cryer III presented the evening’s top honor, the President’s Award, to architect, educator and preservationist Barry Moore, FAIA.

Among the 380 guests filling the River Oaks ballroom were County Judge Ed Emmett, Diane and Harry Gendel, Dorothy and Mickey Ables, Bob and Gayle Eury, Guy Hagstette, Marianne Ivany, Larry & Cindy Burns, Eileen and George Hricik, and Nancy Ames and Danny Ward. In addition, many descendants of Glenn McCarthy, the colorful oilman who built the Shamrock, were in attendance.

Third Coast Swing provided appropriate music for the cocktail hour, which featured historic images of the landmark hotel along with Jeff Lindemann’s private collection of Shamrock memorabilia. Bergner & Johnson created the focal point of the awards presentation: A backdrop of the Shamrock Hotel dramatically lighted in green that proved an irresistible draw for many selfies when the program ended.

The event raised more than $205,000 to support Preservation Houston’s projects and programs.
