From Houston to HBO: Local Writer Pens a Baylor-Inspired Comedy for the Cable Giant

broadway’s buzziest playwright and Cypress native Robert Askins puts another feather in his creative cap: screenwriting. The Tony-nominated writer of the 2011 play Hand to God is developing a half-hour comedy called Brotherhood for HBO that’s inspired by his undergraduate experience at Baylor University in Waco.

“The comedy takes place at the largest Baptist university in the world where a young man joins a secret organization that has two goals: party harder than anyone else and write the funniest, most incisive campus humor magazine in history,” says The Hollywood Reporter.

At Baylor, Askins was a member of the university’s not-so-secret society The NoZe Brotherhood, who, along with perpetrating decades of pranks across campus, have published satirical newspaper The Rope since 1924. The series was pitched as “Animal House set at a conservative college and told from the perspective of the administration and the secret society.”

No release date has been set for Brotherhood, but fans of Askins can see the playwright go back to his roots and workshop his new play, The Carpenter, in Houston at Alley All New Festival, which runs Feb 2–12.

Jeanne grew up in Cajun country where the bayous look a little different from the Bayou City’s. After graduating from LSU, she garnered lifestyle editorial experience on staff at New Orleans Weddings, Southern Living and Country Living magazines, as well as freelancing for Architectural Digest, Atlanta Homes & Lifestyles, Brides and Coastal Living magazines. After living throughout the Southeast, Jeanne and her husband packed up their boots for Texas in June 2016 and haven’t looked back thanks to Tex-Mex, bluebonnets and bigger hair. When she’s not covering the world-renowned arts scene of Houston, Jeanne can be found walking her hound dog Pepper in the Heights, braking for antique markets that rarely have air conditioning or rearranging her living room furniture (again).
