There is only one place in Texas where a winter coat, snow boots and gloves are always necessary, and that’s Moody Gardens’ Shivers Ice Bar. The brand-new saloon, made entirely out of ice (you read that correctly), will open November 12 as part of the resort’s annual holiday attraction, Ice Land.

This is the third year for Ice Land, but the first for Shivers Ice Bar. The new experience will offer guests a pre-set menu of holiday drinks, including Christmas ales and liquor-infused spirits from Alvin-made Texas Tail Vodka. The bar will feature stools, tables and décor that have all been carved from ice by a team of artists from Harbin, China (the Harbin International Ice and Snow Sculpture Festival is the largest in the world), who are taking on the challenge of sculpting two million pounds of ice in 45 days.

The idea for adult-friendly hangout arose from the popular demand of guests in past years—which comes as no surprise for the many parents that frequent Ice Land during the holiday season. “Last year we served hot chocolate with a shot of Baileys and received a lot of positive response because of it,” says Courtney Carr, Moody Gardens public relations coordinator. “From that, we decided to bring something new to Ice Land, so we created Shivers Ice Bar.”

The pub will also showcase an ice block luge to pour extremely cold shots … because what’s better than drinking something that will freeze your insides when you’re hanging out in a nine-degree-controlled facility? No need to head to your local Academy to purchase an oversized coat and boots since Moody Gardens will provided visitors with parkas; however, do not wear your usual Houston attire. It is best to don long pants, gloves and closed-toed shoes.

Ice Land, located inside a 28,000-square-foot tent in Moody Gardens’ parking lot, will be complete by November 3 and open to the public from November 12 through January 8. Visitors can check out Shivers Ice Bar and an additional eight scenes made from ice—such as a slide, tunnel, submarine and lighthouse—everyday from 10 a.m. through 6 p.m. Admission for adults is $26.95, $21.95 for seniors and $15.95 for children.
