Eminem Pays Tribute to George Floyd in New Single with Kid Cudi

Slim Shady’s never been one for holding his tongue. In true fashion, his newest single (err co-single) packs a punch with lyrics embroiled with anger, activism, and a whole lot of sick rhymes. A day after announcing their first-ever collaboration, Eminem and hip-hop superstar Kid Cudi dropped “The Adventures of Moon Man & Slim Shady” on July 9, along with an animated lyric video that features the rap gods as what appears to be crime-fighting superheroes.

The track was a surprise to fans, who were already enjoying the new music both rappers had released earlier this year; Eminem dropped his 11th album, Music to Be Murdered By in January while Cudi has put out two other songs so far in 2020. And there may be more collabs in the future, if the line “the trilogy continues” in Cudi’s outro is anything to go by.

While Cudi’s opening verse of “Moon Man & Slim Shady” largely avoids hot-button issues, instead sticking mostly to rap bragging, Eminem offers prayers for Floyd and Ahmaud Arbery, mentioning them by name and quoting the name-infamous phrase, “I can’t breathe,” which has become synonymous with police brutality and the Black Lives Matter movement. Slim Shady also takes a NSFW jab at New Orleans Saint’s QB Drew Brees, who drew backlash last month for saying that NFL players who kneel during the national anthem are disrespecting the flag, calls out politicians, and bashes anti-maskers while showcasing his signature complex rhymes over a sinister beat.

Bunch of half-wits up in office (What?)

Half of us walking around like a zombie apocalypse

Other half are just pissed off and (Yeah)

Don’t wanna wear a mask and they’re just scoffing

And that’s how you end up catching the s— off ‘em

I just used the same basket as you shopping

Now I’m in a f*ckin’ casket from you coughin’ (Damn)

In case you didn’t catch it, that last word’s a double entendre for “coffin”—even Eminem is telling ya’ll to drop the bull and mask up. You might want to listen.
