The TUTS 2020-2021 Season Includes Broadway-Bound 1776

TUTS 2020-2021 season includes a production Rock of Ages, a jukebox musical featuring ’80s hits from the likes of Pat Benatar, REO Speedwagon, and Journey.

Theatre Under The Stars’ 2020-2021 season, which the company announced on Wednesday, will take audiences from the Second Continental Congress to the Sunset Strip to a world under the sea. And like in previous years, the slate of musicals has a tune for every taste.

“We want our guests to experience the full spectrum of musical theatre and entertainment,” says TUTS Artistic Director Dan Knechtges. “The 2020/2021 season offers a beautiful array of fun, excitement, and uplifting stories.”

The season kicks off in September with 1776, and Houstonians will get to see it before the highly anticipated 2021 Broadway revival. Diane Paulus (Waitress, Finding Neverland) is at the helm, taking the show around the country, including TUTS and Center Theatre Group’s Ahmanson Theatre in Los Angeles, before opening in New York next spring. Since plans for the production, as well as its schedule, were announced last year, critics have been buzzing about how the Tony-winning director—who is known for her reimagining of older shows—will revamp the story surrounding the Declaration of Independence.

Immediately after 1776’s run, TUTS will jump more than 200 years into the future for Rock of Ages, the jukebox musical built around classic rock songs from the 1980s. Tracks from Pat Benatar, REO Speedwagon, and Journey all make appearances in this energetic blast from the shoulder-padded past.

TUTS’ production of Sister Act will star Houston performer Simone Gundy.

Other offerings in the upcoming season include Disney’s The Little Mermaid, Rodgers and Hammerstein’s landmark musical South Pacific, and the gospel-infused Sister Act, which will star Houston performer Simone Gundy (NBC’s The Voice, TUTS’ Memphis).

The final show of the season—what TUTS described in its press release as “a Tony-Award winning hit”—will be announced later in March. Check out the season (including dates) below:
