Workshop performance of Syncing Ink by NSangou Njikam

New playwrights are not gonna miss their shot as the Alley Theatre announces their second annual Alley All New Festival, a two-weekend event that gives rising playwrights the opportunity to present and fine-tune their works in front of audiences.

This year’s festival features three play readings, two workshop performances and—paging Hamilton fans!—the world premiere of Nsangou Njikam’s new hip-hop production, Syncing Ink. To boot: Houston theater lovers can attend these preview performances and workshops for free.

“Being a veteran of new play festivals, I think Alley All New is one of the golden ones,” says Chicago’s Victory Gardens Theater artistic director Chay Yew about the 2016 festival.

This year’s lineup boasts five new works, including buzzy playwright Robert Askins (Hand to God, 2013). The Cypress native will workshop his newest play, The Carpenter, which explores family and class between a blue collar Houstonian and debutant Dallasite, on February 2.

Other featured readings include Roan @ The Gates by Christina Gorman, The Cake by Bekah Brunstetter, Describe the Night by Rajiv Joseph and The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn by Kenneth Lin.

Jeanne grew up in Cajun country where the bayous look a little different from the Bayou City’s. After graduating from LSU, she garnered lifestyle editorial experience on staff at New Orleans Weddings, Southern Living and Country Living magazines, as well as freelancing for Architectural Digest, Atlanta Homes & Lifestyles, Brides and Coastal Living magazines. After living throughout the Southeast, Jeanne and her husband packed up their boots for Texas in June 2016 and haven’t looked back thanks to Tex-Mex, bluebonnets and bigger hair. When she’s not covering the world-renowned arts scene of Houston, Jeanne can be found walking her hound dog Pepper in the Heights, braking for antique markets that rarely have air conditioning or rearranging her living room furniture (again).
