Photo Filters

Whether you’re sharing your experience on Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, Snapchat—really, we can’t keep up—upgrade your arena selfies with six cowboy-themed filters, available on the rodeo’s app. Trust us: Your friends need to see you in a cowboy hat and mustache. The Rodeo Houston app is free for Apple and Android users.

Rodeojis

The rodeo’s app, which features concert lineups, dining information, rodeo scores and other info, has a new feature this year: rodeojis. Text or post these emojis, including a hand proudly boasting a half-eaten chicken drumstick, to friends who “didn’t want to fight the traffic.” Rodeojis are available only to Apple users through the rodeo’s app.

Ag Robotics Contest

New this year, this contest features dozens of FFA and 4-H clubs squaring off to see who has the maddest engineering and problem-solving skills. Teams will build, program and test their robots, earning points by completing as many challenges as possible. May the best ’bot win. The contest starts at 8 a.m. Saturday, March 11, at NRG Center’s East Arena (Hall A).

A Rodeo Playlist

The rodeo’s concert lineup features 30 all-stars from multiple genres. If you need a pre-concert playlist before your favorite country crooner (Chris Stapleton; Mar 9) or pop star (Demi Levoto; Mar 14) takes the stage, download the rodeo’s new custom Spotify playlist, titled “2017 RODEOHOUSTON Lineup,” which features 84 songs by this year’s roster of talent.

A Virtual Rodeo Run

ConocoPhillips 5K and 10K Rodeo Run races, benefiting the rodeo’s Educational Fund, are now in their 30th year. The original organizers probably didn’t foresee this development: New this year, Houstonians can take a “Virtual Run,” which allows them to register for the event and receive an official T-shirt by mail, all without lacing up their sneakers. Don’t worry, we won’t tell anyone… $30 registration fee for 5K, 10K and virtual runners.

Jeanne grew up in Cajun country where the bayous look a little different from the Bayou City’s. After graduating from LSU, she garnered lifestyle editorial experience on staff at New Orleans Weddings, Southern Living and Country Living magazines, as well as freelancing for Architectural Digest, Atlanta Homes & Lifestyles, Brides and Coastal Living magazines. After living throughout the Southeast, Jeanne and her husband packed up their boots for Texas in June 2016 and haven’t looked back thanks to Tex-Mex, bluebonnets and bigger hair. When she’s not covering the world-renowned arts scene of Houston, Jeanne can be found walking her hound dog Pepper in the Heights, braking for antique markets that rarely have air conditioning or rearranging her living room furniture (again).
