Martians, martinis, and mini-tacos were all par for the course at this month’s space-age themed benefit for the Houston Center for Contemporary Craft. The soirée, which raised around $55,000 for the visual arts center’s programing, transformed the Museum District space for cosmic carousing as nearly 200 guests came out in their space-age best, channeling all things NASA, metallic, and ’60s mod.

The evening’s costume contest found victors in the retro-inspired ensembles of Edward Lane McCartney and David Gooding (matching silver space suits), Kathleen and Jeff Zinn (astronaut and space vixen), and Robin Pilcher and Kelly Jones (Woody Allen’s robot from Sleeper and a glamorous alien, respectively).

Plenty more memorable fashions milled about the otherworldly atmosphere including Karina Barbieri in a silver, sequined cocktail dress; Fredia Mitchell as Uhura from the original Star Trek TV series; Sarah Darro as a ’60s flight attendant from another planet; and Patricia Restrepo in a show-stopping vintage hat.

Deep Eddy poured libations like Cosmic Cosmos and Martian Martinis served in an array of hand-crafted glasses from local and national artists that doubled as guests’ parting party favors. Food from Cordua Catering included a delectable dessert wall, mini-taco trees, and, like something straight out of The Jetsons, futuristic pipettes of one-bite salads served in tubes filled with a squeezable shot of dressing—the most innovative appetizer we’ve ever encountered at such an event.

The Martini Madness theme was further emphasized by planetary and atmospheric decor, like a sky filled with shooting stars, and groovy mid-century lounge music from DJ Peter Lucas. Mike Mahlstedt, Kyle Dutton, Libby Cagle, and Lauren Taft co-chaired the event.

Abby Ledoux
Abby Ledoux traded Canada’s border for Mexico’s when she moved to Texas from northwestern Vermont in November 2017 to join the staff at Houstonia. An alumna of Emerson College’s journalism program in Boston, Abby was previously associate editor of three weekly newspapers in her home state of Vermont. There, she covered everything from Bernie Sanders to the heroin epidemic and won numerous state and regional awards for her work, including the Vermont Press Association’s 2014 Rookie of the Year. She was also an investigative reporting fellow at the New England First Amendment Coalition. Today, Abby is excited to explore Houston’s vibrant, diverse culture (and shopping scene). Aside from fashion and design, she’s passionate about politics, hip hop and Mexican food. She believes leopard is a neutral and red lipstick can fix almost anything.
