Paul Qui’s Aqui Is Closing, But He’s Opening Something New

Paul Qui is closing his Montrose restaurant Aqui. Its last day will be Dec. 23, according to a press release.

The Austin-based chef, who was accused in 2016 of beating his girlfriend and harming her child, arrived in Houston with Aqui in 2017. While charges were dismissed against Qui, the controversy surrounding the chef has remained. Concepts in Austin and Dallas have closed in the last two years.

But Aqui won’t be the end of Qui in Houston, according to the release. He, chef Jillian Bartolome, and general manager Adam Mathews plan to open a new concept this spring, focusing on Filipino shared plates. They’ll plan pop-ups for January, during construction.
