Every kid knows back-to-school shopping is the consolation prize for the end of summer—new clothes help soften the blow of a return to dreaded homework—and last weekend, more than 100 people got an up-close look at what’s trending this year at the Galleria.

MD Anderson Children’s Center Hospital pediatric patients, along with their siblings and caregivers, donned the season’s most popular looks from retailers like Zara, Athleta, Gap, Macy’s, Francesca’s, Vera Bradley, Tilly’s, and Buckle and took their turn on the runway to show off graphic tees, patterned denim, and letterman jackets before a standing-room-only crowd in the mega mall’s Nordstrom wing.

It was the ninth year for the back-to-school fashion show, an annual collaboration between MD Anderson and the Galleria, which also included interactive, family-friendly activities like face-painting and balloon-twisting. After the fashion show, MD Anderson puppeteers promoted cancer prevention with “Too Cool to Smoke.”

Houston Life host Courtney Zavala once again emceed the popular event, which drew a crowd including MD Anderson patients, family, and staff.

Abby Ledoux
Abby Ledoux traded Canada’s border for Mexico’s when she moved to Texas from northwestern Vermont in November 2017 to join the staff at Houstonia. An alumna of Emerson College’s journalism program in Boston, Abby was previously associate editor of three weekly newspapers in her home state of Vermont. There, she covered everything from Bernie Sanders to the heroin epidemic and won numerous state and regional awards for her work, including the Vermont Press Association’s 2014 Rookie of the Year. She was also an investigative reporting fellow at the New England First Amendment Coalition. Today, Abby is excited to explore Houston’s vibrant, diverse culture (and shopping scene). Aside from fashion and design, she’s passionate about politics, hip hop and Mexican food. She believes leopard is a neutral and red lipstick can fix almost anything.
