So…What’s the Deal with Drake?

Why are you so obsessed with us, Drake?

If any other Canadian announced he was throwing a Houston Appreciation Weekend, or opening a pop-up strip club/“dance experience” during the Super Bowl, we would laugh awkwardly and ignore him.

But despite hailing from Toronto, Drake—and his love of Houston, its sound, and its strippers—cannot be denied. He points to a couple weeks here with Lil Wayne in 2008 as the beginning of his rap career (that’s what his screw-inflected song “November 18” is about), and since then, he can’t stop showing us love.

“H-Town my second home like I’m James Harden,” Drizzy rapped on “No New Friends,” the most effusive of his many lyrical shout-outs to Houston, a few of which don’t even reference strippers.

Plus there’s the Astros tattoo on his shoulder, his label’s Rice owl–looking logo, and his “Hotline Bling” video—please don’t try to tell us that it wasn’t inspired by Rice’s James Turrell Skyspace.

Houstonians including Bun B and former mayor Annise Parker have welcomed Drake’s H-Town fandom with open arms. In fact, June 10, 2014, was Drake Day here in Houston, as designated by Parker.
