May’s Perfect Party: The Skype Happy Hour Edition

If you didn’t expect U.S. Senator Ted Cruz to be the voice of reason through the coronavirus crisis, you’d be forgiven. But the fact is, while U.S. Senator John Cornyn was out at a bar sharing photos of his delicious Corona beer, Cruz was self-quarantined for the second time, soberly reminding others of the seriousness of the pandemic. So welcome to the party, Ted Cruz. Also on the guest list is Harris County Judge Lina Hidalgo, who has been a steady leader during these tumultuous times, along with the comforting, knowledgeable Umair Shah, executive director of Harris County Public Health. Our charities have stepped up heroically, as they always do. Interfaith Ministries for Greater Houston’s Meals on Wheels project, which each year delivers a week’s worth of shelf-stable meals to more than 4,000 homebound seniors ahead of hurricane season, went into high gear to get kits out early, and as such we’re inviting Maria Magee, IM’s chief development officer. We’ll put her next to Kathryn Lott, executive director of the Southern Smoke Foundation, which has pledged to assist restaurant owners and employees who’ve lost their livelihood during the crisis. And finally, our fiesta needs Scott McClelland, president of H-E-B, who’s done everything right through this horror show, looking after his employees and donating millions to the community while keeping shelves stocked and calming shoppers’ nerves. So we raise our quarantini to you.
