September’s Perfect Party: Who-Wants-Pickle-Cupcakes Edition

Guess what, guys? We’re getting a pickle festival. Okay, technically, Kingwood is getting a pickle festival, but if you don’t live there, you might want to make a pilgrimage to Kingwood Town Center Park on September 7, as organizer Krystal Wertman—who we are of course inviting to this month’s soiree—promises In a Pickle festivalgoers all sorts of intriguing items, among them pickle pizza and cupcakes.

Also on the list: Houston artist Selven O’Keef Jarmon, whose amazing “360 Degrees Vanishing” project, years in the making, has come to fruition in the form of thousands upon thousands of beads strung by both South African beaders and Houstonian volunteers, now jutting into view from their dynamic steel frame outside of Art League Houston on Montrose; filmmaker Janice Engel, whose new documentary Raise Hell: The Life and Times of Molly Ivins, about the beloved, larger-than-life Houston-born columnist, has been getting great reviews and opens nationwide September 20; Houston-born mystery author Attica Locke, whose new novel, Heaven, My Home, takes place in East Texas after the disappearance of a young boy, and who reads at Brazos Bookstore on September 23; Houston Rocket Russell Westbrook, who was once hated by fans as a member of rival Oklahoma City but will now be embraced as one of our own (bygones); and finally, Democratic National Committee Chair Tom Perez, coming to town for the party’s third primary debate, taking place here September 12 and 13. May the best woman win!
