January’s Perfect Party: Welcome-to-2017 Edition

With 2016 over, it’s the dawn of a new era: the era of Trump. While the Bayou City went solidly blue in November, we’re still a patched-together crazy-quilt of humanity—and if you doubted that for a second, consider Houstonians’ reactions to the election of the new leader of the free world.

According to her Facebook page, Fox 26’s Scarlett Fakhar was so elated by the impending regime change, she couldn’t sleep that first night. “Look what Obama has done,” she wrote, “how he has made the entire country hate one another.” (She was later fired.) UH students including Maria Treviño-Rodriguez stood together against Trump on campus, championing diversity and a women’s right to choose, among other causes. Black Lives Matter also protested, with shaken leader Ashton Woods lamenting that “white supremacy won”; another participant, Shere Dore, ended up accused of punching a police horse, of all things. Meanwhile, Ted Cruz—love him or hate him, he’s ours—hightailed it to New York for a meeting with the president-elect, apparently wishing to put his sick burn of the candidate at the Republican National Convention behind him, once and for all. And finally, local man Christopher Mathews allegedly did something that may or may not have been election-related, although reading the Chron headline, it was hard not to see a connection: “Houston man accused of grabbing women’s crotches faces four charges.” As of this writing, he remained in jail.
