February’s Perfect Party: Bring On the Smoked Meat Edition

Foodies are ridiculously pumped about culty Blood Bros. BBQ going from pop-up to a permanent location on Bellaire Boulevard, and so are we, so we’re inviting pitmaster Quy Hoang to this month’s party and asking him to bring the brisket. We’re also inviting local singer-songwriter Hayes Carll, who has a new album, What It Is, out and plays two Houston shows this month (Feb 15 at Continental Club, Feb 16 at White Oak Music Hall) before hitting the road on a national tour; Kinder HSPVA Principal Scott Allen, whose students finally have moved into their incredible new downtown digs; author Soraya Chemaly, who’s coming to town to read from her new book about female anger, Rage Becomes Her, at Brazos Bookstore (Feb 11); Baltimorean/former Houstonian artist Antonius Bui, whose beautiful cut-out portraits of queer Asian American Pacific Islanders are now up at Lawndale Art Center, and who will participate in this month’s Experimental Action performance-art festival (Feb 21–23); and, last but not at all least, Florence Scott, who, at 18, was the youngest graduate at UH’s commencement ceremonies last semester, where she received her bachelor’s degree in psychology. Way to go!
