Astronaut Wives Club Recap: Now What?

1Betty
The wives' calm morning of drinking, playing cards and wearing a fab pumpkin-colored shift dress is interrupted not only by the daily shirtless jog of some new astronaut hottie, but also but a threatening letter sent to Betty about how someone wants to replace her as Gus's wife.

After said strumpet shows up at NASA claiming to be Gus's wife, he's assigned a Secret Service detail. He doesn't tell Betty because... he thinks she won't notice? Gus ain't the perfect husband he was earlier this season, and his avoidance of the subject tells Betty that he knows his stalker. You know, biblically.

"If Gordo and I can work it out, so will you," says Trudy, whose return to non-sham marriage has not ended her excellent streak of pants-based outfits (not including the disaster in the first slide). Betty's delightful floral frock says they are not yet sartorially on the same page.

When Gus is called in to replace Alan on the first Mercury flight, Betty has to put aside their issues. "You come home to your wife, Gus Grissom," she says, and we all know what she means.

By the launch in Florida, she's back in perfect wife mode for the cameras, but she doesn't sugar coat the experience for the new wives. "Being an astronauts' wife makes you stronger," she tells her, and it seems like she hopes rather than believes that it's true.

John Glenn is running for Senate in Ohio, and Annie has recovered from her shyness and stutter enough to briefly introduce herself before bringing out Rene to speak about her husband for her.

When John gets a bad concussion, Annie and Rene hold a campaign event on his behalf. Annie's demure, very political wife outfits are stunning in their subtlety—look at the hint of red in the pleats here.

Rally completed, they return and find that John's condition is worse than expected. Not able to campaign, his run for office is effectively called off. Annie tells Rene to go back to her own life with Scott.

It's not all bad news for the Glenns, however. As John says, "there are a lot of opportunities for a washed-up hero," and he takes a job as VP of RC Cola so they can stay in Houston.

19Rene
Although thematically "In The Blind" is relatively disconnected from the feminist bent that made "Flashpoint" so fun, it looks like we've only seen the beginning of emancipated Rene, who wears watermelon colors and loves making speeches for the political crowds on Annie's behalf.

Rene would rather stay on the campaign trail and wear crazy skirt suits. She suggests becoming John's press secretary only to find out the campaign is over. Time to take this outfit off and burn it.

Her marriage rekindled, Louise gets one solitary moment of happiness beating her husband at golf before he collapses with some sort of attack. Alan refuses to let their doctor run tests, lest NASA remove him from the next mission. Louise realizes the danger but agrees to keep his secret.

35Marge
What Marge doesn't tell Louise is that she and Deke are going through a dry spell. Sadly, this is Marge's most notable storyline in weeks. The off-the-shoulder dress is a similar rare bright spot in her wardrobe, as she's always stuck in muddy browns and purples. Sorry, Marge.

Trudy and Jo spend the episode playing cards, day drinking, judging women who don't drink during the day and looking fierce. The life of an astronaut wife might not be so bad after all.

Wifeys, we should know by now that any series set in the 60s is going to be largely about how the world was changing—and, occasionally, how it wasn’t. In “In The Blinds” we open eight months after the Kennedy assassination, as some of the original Gemini astronauts are still hankering for space assignments on Mercury flights and others are figuring out what to do with the rest of their post-astronaut lives, in Houston and beyond.
