Christine Ha’s Amazing Blind Makeup Tutorial

Applying lipliner, unsmudged mascara and a properly blended foundation are challenging makeup skills for anyone, much less for someone without sight. But leave it to Houstonian and Masterchef winner Christine Ha to prove that just because something seems difficult, that doesn’t mean it’s impossible.

In one episode of her occasional YouTube series “Blind Life of Christine Ha,” the chef talks about her experience on Masterchef, and how other contestants would watch “in awe” as she did her own makeup before filming, which prompted her to post the tutorial online last summer. (No, it’s not new to the Internet, but it’s new to us.)

In six minutes, Ha applies foundation, mascara, lipliner, lipstick, blush and eyeliner in addition to curling her eyelashes for what she calls her “daily makeup face,” using the feel of the tools on her face as a guide. For special occasions, she says she’s working on adding eyeshadow to the mix, but that it’s tricky to blend it properly without being able to see it.

“Now that I’m in my 30s, I’ve been told we have to worry more about redness on our skin so I’ve started wearing foundation. I use a brush, which helps it blend really well so I don’t have to worry too much about streaks,” says Ha. “As you can see, I am covering the area around my nose where I get the most redness, or so I’ve been told.”

Ha also dispenses a few tips that any makeup lover can use: tap a blush brush to remove excess powder before applying, don’t run eyeliner all the way to the inside corner of the eye if you want to make your eyes look bigger and never forget SPF 30 to fight sun damage and keep your skin looking healthy.
