Hooray, Topshop Is Here!

Five looks at the new Topshop inside the Galleria, opened Thursday.

Like many people, I discovered Topshop in London, where the cavernous 90,000-square-foot flagship seems to tower over all the other shopping in the famously shopping-centric Oxford Circus.

The new Topshop and Topman stores that opened today inside the Galleria aren’t nearly that huge, but at 17,000 combined square feet over two stories, it’s still an impressive space. It’s certainly a major step up in presence from the shop-in-shop inside Nordstrom at the other end of the Galleria, which until now was the only brick and mortar space in Houston in which to find the British fast-fashion brand.

Women’s collections, including shoes and accesories, take up the first floor, with a virtually identical layout for men upstairs. For those who haven’t discovered the brand yet, Topshop is priced somewhere between H&M and Zara, with pockets of more high-end collections and collaborations. The store’s style personality, if you will, ranges from sleek workwear, preppy striped basics and girly frocks to the neon crop tops favored at music festivals like Glastonbury. In other words, a little bit of everything, but trending young.

At the preview on Wednesday night, I successfully resisted dropping some coin on a pair of $30 Wayfarer sunglasses in pretty spring pastels and a pair of 70s-style wooden clog sandals, only to lose resistance when I wandered upstairs and spring for a $20 skinny tie and a $50 geometric print short-sleeve shirt for my guy. Such is Topshop.
