We’ve all been there: You’re going about your business when an innocent glance at the calendar sends your heart racing. It’s Mother’s Day, already? You cannot, under any circumstances, show up empty-handed on May 13, and though you may be cutting it close, you can still do better than a mad dash to Target. We know that when it comes to galavanting around the city looking for a reasonable gift, ain’t nobody got time for that, so we picked our favorites for you. They’re all available at stores here in Houston, so if you grab one on Saturday night, well…our lips are sealed.
If you do get a thrill from waiting until the last possible moment (or if you’d rather shop with your mom this weekend), may we suggest the following pop-ups:
Zadok Jewelers Trunk Show
When: Friday, May 11–Saturday, May 12 Where: Zadok Jewelers, 1749 Post Oak Blvd. What: Fine jewelry (including new collections in spring colorways) from featured designers Carelle, Ippolita, Marco Bicego Pomellato, and Roberto Coin.
Deutsch & Deutsch Trunk Show
When: Friday, May 11, 10 a.m.–6 p.m. (Armenta); Saturday, May 12, 10 a.m.–5 p.m. (Lauren K and Temple St. Clair) Where: Deutsch & Deutsch Houston, 3747 Westheimer Rd. What: Representatives from three designers–Armenta, Lauren K, and Temple St. Clair–will be in-store to present their new jewelry and discuss the exclusive designs. Armenta’s pieces are inspired by famous works of art throughout Spain; Temple St. Clair uses rare colored gems and distinctive gold work to conjure earth and the cosmos; and Lauren K specializes in bohemian-chic jewelry.
When: Saturday, May 12; 11 a.m.–6 p.m. Where: Heights Mercantile, 714A Yale St. What: Shop jewelry, candles, clothes, baked goods, flowers, and other gifts from local vendors like Ellion, Burdlife, Picked Flower Co., Miradela, and many more.Â
When: Sunday, May 13; 1–5 p.m. Where: Bayou Bend, 6003 Memorial Dr. What: Explore Bayou Bend’s gardens and mansion; before, enjoy live music from harpist Hope Cowan and a complimentary cookie and glass of lemonade on the terrace. Visit the newly reopened Bayou Bend Shop in the historic cottage and receive 20 percent off the item of your choice. Free admission for mothers, grandmothers, and children age 9 and under.
Abby Ledoux traded Canada’s border for Mexico’s when she moved to Texas from northwestern Vermont in November 2017 to join the staff at Houstonia.
An alumna of Emerson College’s journalism program in Boston, Abby was previously associate editor of three weekly newspapers in her home state of Vermont. There, she covered everything from Bernie Sanders to the heroin epidemic and won numerous state and regional awards for her work, including the Vermont Press Association’s 2014 Rookie of the Year. She was also an investigative reporting fellow at the New England First Amendment Coalition.
Today, Abby is excited to explore Houston’s vibrant, diverse culture (and shopping scene). Aside from fashion and design, she’s passionate about politics, hip hop and Mexican food. She believes leopard is a neutral and red lipstick can fix almost anything.
