Texans are poised to save more than $102 million at the register this weekend, the state comptroller reports, when the annual three-day tax-free holiday returns Friday, August 9 and suspends the typical 8.25 percent sales tax on qualifying items purchased in Texas stores, online, or from catalogues (those still exist?) through midnight Sunday, August 11.
That mean’s there’s no tax on most clothes, shoes, and school supplies under $100, though sports equipment, luggage, jewelry, purses, technology, and textbooks are largely non-exempt. You can find the whole list here.
While most will take this opportunity to load up on backpacks, notebooks, and calculators before the start of the next school year, remember: Tax-Free Weekend is not reserved for parents. An extra couple bucks off those leopard-print shoes you’ve had your eye on might just be incentive enough to pull the trigger. Happy shopping!
Abby Ledoux traded Canada’s border for Mexico’s when she moved to Texas from northwestern Vermont in November 2017 to join the staff at Houstonia.
An alumna of Emerson College’s journalism program in Boston, Abby was previously associate editor of three weekly newspapers in her home state of Vermont. There, she covered everything from Bernie Sanders to the heroin epidemic and won numerous state and regional awards for her work, including the Vermont Press Association’s 2014 Rookie of the Year. She was also an investigative reporting fellow at the New England First Amendment Coalition.
Today, Abby is excited to explore Houston’s vibrant, diverse culture (and shopping scene). Aside from fashion and design, she’s passionate about politics, hip hop and Mexican food. She believes leopard is a neutral and red lipstick can fix almost anything.
